"Potatoes in Practice"

near Dundee 9-8-01

SAC are involved with the Scottish Crop Research Institute and the British Potato Council in various potato trials in Scotland. Potatoes in Practice is an oportunity for growers and advisers to see these trials and to discuss a range of topics in detail. Among other things Eric Anderson was talking about soil conditions and how it affects water use by the crop and hence water scheduling. This page is a resume of his talk and some of the EnviroSCAN soil moisture data from the unwatered crops.

Rooting depth discussion led by Eric Anderson (SAC) and soil moisture content measured with an EnviroSCAN
This graph shows the water content every 10cm down through the soil profile to 70cm. You can see that after the rain on the 15th July the soil was about full. Water use (stepping) occured almost equally at each depth down to 40cm. There is much reduced water use at 50cm and virtually none at 60 and 70cm. (don't rely on deep rooting to get water for your crop - you may not have it!)
